Three versions of De revolutionibus have been printed in the modern era – in Nürnberg 1543, Basel 1566 and Amsterdam 1617. For over 200 years (1616–1822) the work of Copernicus was on the index of forbidden books of the Catholic Church, so it could not be reissued. It did not appear in print again until the second half of the 19th century, largely as a result of the growing interest in the history of science at that time.
