1538 IV 25 – to John Dantiscus

Copernicus to Bishop John Dantiscus, Frombork, 25 April 1538

OOriginal: University Library, Uppsala, H. 154, c. 163-163v.

Nicholas Copernicus (Nicolaus Copernicus) replies to John Dantiscus, Bishop of Varmia, that he has conferred with [Tiedemann Giese], the Bishop of Chełmno, in the matter of the Canonships of Varmia, still held by Dantiscus and Giese, entrusted to him. He suggests that the question be not presented to the Chapter until a decision concerning the matter of the Cantor of Warmia, John Zimmermann is taken-up; then, there will be a better occasion for dealing with that matter.

To his lordship, Most Reverend Father in Christ, Johannes [Dantiscus] by the grace of God bishop of Varmia, my most kindly and most honorable lord

My lord, Most Reverend Father in Christ, most gracious lord:

With regard to that matter of the canonries, which your Most Reverend Lordship entrusted to me. I have received the plan and shared it with the Most Reverend [bishop] of Chełmno. The matter did not seem to be advanced enough to be referred to the Chapter unless the case of the Cantor, which has intervened, is decided first. When that is done, there will be a better opportunity to bring the proposal up, unless another plan is conceived in the meantime by your Most Reverend Lordship, to whom I wish my services to be acceptable.

Frombork, the fifth day after Easter Sunday [25 April] 1538

Your Most Reverend Lordship's

most devoted

Nicholas Copernicus

Frombork, 25 April 1538

Eidem Reuerendissimae Dominationi Vestrae deuotissimus

Nicolaus Copernicus
